Captain James T. Kirk On Leadership

As I was browsing the web today I ran across an interesting post on Forbes about leadership, as inspired by the character of James Kirk.James Kirk (source: Wikipedia)

The 5 "lessons" taught by Kirk, claims this post on Forbes, are:

  1. Never Stop Learning
  2. Have Advisors With Different Worldviews
  3. Be Part Of The Away Team
  4. Play Poker, Not Chess
  5. Blow up the Enterprise

In particular I thought that lessons number 1,2, and 4 were quire remarkable. In the words of Kirk:

“You know the greatest danger facing us is ourselves, an irrational fear of the unknown. But there’s no such thing as the unknown– only things temporarily hidden, temporarily not understood.”

“One of the advantages of being a captain, Doctor, is being able to ask for advice without necessarily having to take it.”

“Not chess, Mr. Spock. Poker. Do you know the game?”
